Marketing, Design Team Helps Promote Somerville, NJ

While every business contributes to the economic vitality of its hometown, Y Marketing & ITO Design at times has found itself in the unique position of doing business to directly benefit the local economy.

However, the company's work for Somerville District Management Corp. represents just some of what it can offer.

Partner Mark Yearick said the advertising and design company is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2010. Its services include Web site design and development; e-mail and Internet marketing; printed advertisements, brochures and direct mail; and custom exhibit booths.

Yearick, an advertising graduate from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas, was working for an advertising agency in New York City when he realized there was a void in the marketplace that hampered a company with a small to midsize budget from obtaining professional-quality advertising exposure.

"Either you had to work with a large agency that was cost prohibitive, or you had to work with a network or freelancers that didn't give you a lot of control over the whole program or, in some cases, the quality you were looking for," Yearick said.

Yearick's partner, Ray Gonzalez, an industrial design graduate from Syracuse University, also was working in New York City in design.

"Our partnership is a good synergy because we have complementary skill sets," Yearick said. "Ray is on the design side of the table and spearheads Web development, while I handle the marketing and communications side of the business."

The company moved to Somerville in 2000 from Bedminster. The business was launched in Edgewater.

Yearick said one way his company distinguishes itself from competitors is by doing everything in house.

"That means we have Web site programming, graphic design, Web design, copywriting and a full realm of creative and preproduction services under our roof," Yearick said.

The company designed Somerville District Management Corp.'s Web site,, which connects visitors to local restaurants and shops, as well as upcoming events. It also helped launch the Somerville Jazz Festival this year through print, broadcast and Internet marketing.

"It was a huge success," Yearick said. "The Somerset County Courthouse lawn was packed."

The company's other clients include large industrial manufacturers, data companies, nonprofits, business-to-business marketers and local retailers.

"We're very optimistic about the future. I think there are exciting opportunities ahead for marketers through a variety of media, and we're looking forward to helping our clients take advantage of them," Yearick said.
